Keep final answer options where respondents expect them
Randomize answer choices while keeping a designated final option such as “Other” or “None of the above” in a predictable position.
Randomizing answer choices can reduce order effects, but not every option should move.
Choices such as “Other” or “None of the above” work best when participants can find them in a predictable place.
When answer randomization is enabled, a designated final option can remain fixed while the other choices change order.
The pattern is useful for answer choices that act differently from the rest of the list. Keeping the final option in place makes the question easier to scan without giving up randomization for the substantive choices.
The change gives survey creators more control over question presentation. It helps preserve the intent of randomization while keeping exception choices where respondents expect to find them.
